Academic Senate's Research Studies Committee provides advice to Senate regarding academic matters relating to research undertaken by research and higher degree students of the University. On behalf of Senate, it oversees the candidatures of those students and has the delegated authority to approve the conferral of research higher degrees. The committee provides advice to Senate regarding the development of research training policy in the University. The University of Western Sydney Integrity in Research Committee has the responsibility of advising on high level issues relating to the ethical and professional conduct of research. For more information, please view the Integrity in Research Committee.
The University of Western Sydney Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) has the responsibility of considering the ethical implications of proposed human research studies. This responsibility includes monitoring the ethical aspects of all research studies involving human participants undertaken by the staff and students of the University of Western Sydney. All research or teaching exercises involving the use of animals must have the approval of the UWS Animal Care and Ethics Committee (ACEC) before it can proceed. The ACEC is a representative Committee made up of animal researchers, veterinarians, animal welfare representatives and independent members. The UWS Biosafety and Radiation Safety Committee has been established to monitor research and teaching proposals involving the use of micro-organisms of Risk Group 2 or higher, whole micro-organisms, in vivo use of imported biological products, specimens of human origin (including blood products), recombinant DNA and ionising radiation sources.
