Indigenous Access Scholarships


Indigenous Access Scholarships will provide payment to Indigenous higher education students, particularly those from rural or remote areas of Australia who need to relocate to take up an undergraduate course or an approved enabling course.

An Indigenous student who receives an Indigenous Access Scholarship will also have access to a continuing Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (CECS) and, where eligible, a Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship (CAS). Scholarship Benefits: $4 166 in 2008 (indexed annually)

Duration: One-off payment

Course(s): Any UWS undergraduate degree program

Eligibility to apply:

Applicants must:

  • Be Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people who meet the Commonwealth three-tiered criteria for Aboriginality. This requires that an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person is of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and identifies as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and is accepted as such by the community in which he or she lives or has lived.
  • Have accepted a UWS offer in an undergraduate degree program as a commencing student;
  • Have not previously completed a degree equivalent to or higher than a bachelors degree; and
  • Meet the financial hardship/equity criteria, as set by the Commonwealth*

Application Process and Selection: Applicants should apply directly through the University Admissions Centre (UAC). Application forms are available from the UWS Badanami Centre for Indigenous Education or on UAC’s website at Equity Scholarships

Selection of this scholarship is based primarily on financial need. Additional factors such as educational disadvantage, membership of a specific equity group and/or significantly adverse personal circumstances may be taken into account where the committee must differentiate between equally qualified applicants.

Conditions of the Scholarship: Students must remain in full-time or part-time study and maintain a minimum GPA of four (pass average).
