Program Benefits

1. What is the Social Engagement and Leadership Program (SELP)

The SELP is an exciting program aimed at enhancing the UWS student experience.  Over a six week period SELP participants will focus on improving their career readiness by building skills that are highly valued by employers.  In small teams, participants will engage with our community partners on meaningful projects that will enhance their problem solving, communication and interpersonal skills. 

This is the second year the program is being offered, building on its substantial success in 2012. SELP is unique to UWS.  We recommend that you take a look at the video and photo gallery to gain useful insights into last year’s program.

2. How will the program benefit me as a student?

SELP participants will be better prepared for careers in global leadership. You will develop skills in business leadership, achieving team outcomes, cross cultural perspectives, globalisation and social responsibility.

Program Eligibility

3. Am I eligible to apply for the SELP program?

Successful SELP candidates are expected to have a minimum GPA of 4.0 and be currently enrolled in a UWS degree at undergraduate or postgraduate level. To be eligible to apply, you must have completed a minimum of 80 credit points at UWS as an undergraduate student OR a minimum of 40 credit points as a postgraduate student. 

4. Do I have to be currently enrolled at UWS to be eligible for the program?

Yes, you must be currently enrolled to be eligible for the program.

5. Do I have to pay to be involved in the program?

No, this is a free program for UWS students.

6. Can I be involved in the program if I have a part time job?

Yes, part time students are welcome to apply. Applicants are encouraged to consider their study and work commitments carefully before applying for the program.

7. What happens if I am not able to attend one of the events or workshops?

Successful participants will be required to attend all formal SELP sessions.

8. How do I apply for the SELP program?

Applying is easy! When applications open you need to apply online using the SELP online application form. You will be asked to login to Careerhub (opens in a new window) (you must be registered) to gain direct access to the form.

9. I’m not registered with Careerhub, so how do I apply for SELP?

You must be registered with Careerhub to access the application form. 

Register with Careerhub (opens in a new window) using your MyUWS account username and password. 

Once your Careerhub registration is complete, log out of Careerhub and continue to apply to SELP by using the SELP online application form. 

Please note, you will be asked to login into Careerhub (opens in a new window) again using your MyUWS username and password to gain direct access to the SELP online application form.

10. Are there any terms or conditions attached to the SELP program?

The terms and conditions for SELP participation are listed on the SELP online application form. You can access the application form via Careerhub (opens in a new window).

11. When do applications for SELP close?

SELP applications will close on Wednesday, 19 June 2013. We recommend you apply early to avoid disappointment.  There are only 120 places available.  Applications will not be considered after the closing date.

Program Content and Delivery

12. How many hours will I have to commit to the program?

The SELP program will require a minimum commitment of 32 hours over six weeks which includes 16 hours of formal sessions. In addition, you will need to allocate time to complete a team project of at least 16 hours. Program details.

13. When does the program start and finish?

The 2013 SELP program commences on 2 July 2013 with a formal launch and concludes on 9 August 2013 with an awards ceremony.

14. How much time at home will I need to commit?

There is no time commitment expected outside of formal sessions.

15. Will I have to travel to another UWS campus other than my home campus?

No, all formal SELP sessopms are run at the Parramatta South campus.

16. How are the projects allocated?

Projects will be assigned to SELP participants at the program orientation and launch.

17. Where can I do my project? Will UWS find me an organisation or do I need to find one myself?

Projects will be sourced by UWS for the SELP program through the University’s community partner network. Students are not expected to source projects independently.

18. How many students will form part of each team project?

Each SELP project will be allocated a team of 6 students.

19. How many hours will the project take?

Projects will require a commitment of no less than 16 hours of active involvement.

20. How many students will be selected for the program?

120 participants will be selected, 60 local and 60 international students.

21. Who will teach the skill components of the program?

UWS academics from the UWS School of Business will undertake all the workshop sessions.

Team Projects

22. When do I start and conclude my project?

Projects will commence shortly after the formal launch on 2 July 2013 and will conclude at the award ceremony on 9 August 2013.

23. How many participants will be in each team?

There will be six participants in each team, from diverse degrees and cultural backgrounds.

24. How long is my project?

A minimum of 16 hours.

25. Who will be my supervisor on the project?

You will meet your supervisor for a briefing at the commencement of your project.

26. How will I contact my supervisor?

You will be given contact details at your first briefing with a supervisor.

27. Where will I be located during my project?

As the projects are hosted by a variety of organisations, teams will receive full briefings at the commencement of their project. Some teams may be located at the host organisation for a short period, while others may be required to meet at the Parramatta South Campus.

28. How much will it cost me to take part in a project?

Project involvement is free, however you will incur expenses such as travel to organisations and or campus, meals, use of your own IT facilities and perhaps stationery.

29. What support will be offered to the team during the project?

Support will be available to each team as they progress though their project. Details will be given out at the initial project briefings.

30. What happens if I am not able to meet with my team as agreed?

Your selection to SELP is conditional to your total commitment to the team’s activities during the period of the program. This is non-negotiable. If you are unable to make the commitment you are required to inform the SELP Manager/Facilitator at the orientation and launch evening.

31. Who will I contact if I run into issues with my project?

Your project supervisor and team members are your first set of resources. If the issue remains unresolved, you should contact the SELP facilitator via email selp@uws.edu.au. We suggest that issues be tackled as a team; such a course of action will enhance problem solving skills and assist in your overall learning.

32. Are teams expected to present their project findings?

Yes, there will be a brief formal presentation of each team’s project summaries at the Award Ceremony.

Program Recognition

33. Will I get a certificate or other written reference for participating in the program?

SELP participants will be awarded a certificate at the conclusion of the program.

34. Will there be a presentation of the projects at the conclusion of the program?

Yes, a formal program award ceremony has been scheduled during which participants will have the opportunity to showcase their projects. We recommend that you look at the SELP 2012 video and photo gallery for an overview of last year's program.
