Our services are provided free of charge. Referrals from your general practitioner, although welcome, are not required for therapy. However, a referral from a health professional (e.g. your GP or a school counsellor) is required for psychometric assessments.
When you speak to our staff you will be asked to provide some basic details, including a brief description of the reason you are seeking an appointment at the UWS Psychology Clinic. As we are a training and research clinic, we cannot accept referrals from people with severe and chronic conditions such as psychosis, significant suicidal risk, substance abuse, addiction or gambling difficulties, severe personality disorder or those with criminal or violent behaviour. We firmly believe that such problems are best treated by fully qualified and experienced practitioners. Medico-legal reports or second opinions are not able to be provided by the Psychology Clinic.
Once an appointment has been made, you will be sent an information pack that includes directions to our clinic.

What to bring
For therapy appointments please bring any previous documentation or reports written by other mental health professionals.
In the case of specialist psychometric assessments please bring any previous assessment reports or general documentation that you feel may be relevant to your situation.
Your First Appointment
Before we decide on a program of treatment for you, psychological assessments are conducted in order to clearly understand your individual presenting problems.
A full assessment often covers 2-4 appointments and a range of strategies are employed, including clinical interview, structured interviews, and client self-report measures. A picture emerges of the factors responsible for the development and maintenance of the client’s psychological problems, and a treatment plan is derived from this formulation.
For child therapy clients, behavioural assessments may also be conducted. These gather information from parents and care givers, teachers and the child about possible cognitive and psychological problems that may be impacting on the child’s behaviour.
Following the initial assessment, problem formulation and treatment recommendations, should we believe that your needs are better met by an alternative service, contact details for that service will be provided to you and we will help facilitate your introduction to that service.
Fees
The UWS Psychology Clinic offers a free treatment service. Following the first assessment appointments, a course of treatment typically lasts for 10-15 sessions, although additional sessions are available if required. The assessment appointments to assess your presenting problem prior to a program of treatment are included in our free service.
Confidentiality
Matters discussed between yourself and your treating provisional psychologists are confidential. The nature of this confidentiality and any limits that might apply will be discussed with you during your first appointment.
