Peace and Development Studies @ UWS

Since 2000, UWS has been offering majors in Peace and Humanitarian Studies.

From 2010 the major has been titled “Peace and Development Studies”.
The major has three main emphases:

  • Peace studies;
  • Humanitarian studies; and
  • Development studies.

The Peace and Development Studies major is concerned with inequalities of power and opportunity that lead to international and local conflict, uneven development, social dislocation and environmental degradation.

Students examine the structural causes of

  • racist and gendered violence;
  • environmental justice;
  • forced migration;
  • poverty;
  • resource conflict; and
  • inter-generational inequity.

Constructive solutions include empowerment and self-determination, sustainable living, peace building, and conflict resolution strategies.
