Biography

I have worked at the University of Western Sydney in many capacities as lecturer in sociology and social science and as Course Advisor for the Bachelor of Social Science. My research interests are diverse and strongly linked to her teaching interests and community engagement activities. My research has included the social history of mental health care and mental health nursing in NSW, nurse education in Western Sydney and women and ageing. I have received five research grants (including two consultancies that involved research) and one teaching development grant which was focused on curriculum development in the area of alcohol and other drugs. I am on the Board of the Mental Health Association of NSW and a member of Alzheimers Australia, the peak body for people living with dementia.

Areas of Research / Teaching Expertise

Expertise in sociology of health and mental health, drugs and addiction, ageing, children and the life-course.

Grants / Current Projects

I am an associate member of the Social Justice & Social Change Research Centre and in 2007-2008 was a member of two research teams to receive funding from the Mental Health Coordinating Council to research issues in relation to drug and alcohol use by young people with a mental illness. These 2 research projects were developed in collaboration with two community organizations in the field of mental health; the Richmond Fellowship of NSW and the Mental Health Association of NSW.
