Motherhood Choices: A Decision Aid for Women with Rheumatoid Arthritis
This study is being conducted by Dr Tanya Covic (UWS), Associate Professor Louise Sharpe (University of Sydney), Associate Professor Julie Pallant (University of Melbourne), Professor Nick Manolios (University of Sydney) and Mrs Diana Aspinall (Arthritis NSW), and is being funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC).
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects more women than men and is often diagnosed during a woman's childbearing years. Many young women with RA may be concerned about the impact of their condition on pregnancy, on their unborn child and on their ability to manage parenting, and also how these things will in turn affect their RA.
Currently, there are no specific resources available that provide this information to women with RA. Therefore this study aims to develop a Decision Aid (DA) resource which will help young women with RA to make informed decisions about pregnancy and motherhood, and encourage a shared decision making process with health professionals.
Women with Rheumatoid Arthritis, aged between 20-45 and who may be contemplating having children, are invited to take part in this study. Participation will involve completing two questionnaires and a brief telephone follow-up.
