Traditional Chinese Medicine

Tradional Chinese Medicine (TCM): is one of many disciplines within the School of Science and Health that is located on the Campbelltown campus. The course equips graduates to become nationally registered practitioners of TCM and work within the health care system as independent primary care practitioners. Usage and acceptance of TCM, Chinese medicine (CM) used exchangeably (both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine) is expanding and TCM is making a unique contribution to many fields of health, specifically musculoskeletal problems, women’s health, chronic illness, an adjunct to biomedical treatments, prevention and promotion of wellness. Students are challenged offered opportunities to learn a mix biomedical sciences, TCM theory and many practical clinical skills.

Research: The TCM teaching program works closely with the Centre for Complementary Medicine Research based at Campbelltown Campus – the leading TCM research centre in Australia. Students learn basic research skills as part of their degree and have the opportunity to undertake Honours and postgraduate research if this is their interest. The dynamic teaching and research team at UWS is pioneering research in the fields of acupuncture, Chinese herbs and TCM practice.

Facilities: The Uniclinic on Campbelltown Campus provides TCM students clinical learning and the experience of treating patients in the full range of TCM modalities. The TCM clinic is fully equipped with a raw herbal pharmacy and the range of granulated herb products. From 2nd year students are observing and then participating in TCM Clinic.

Clinical Placements: Our students have the opportunity to participate in clinical placements. The Uniclinic provides a supportive environment to gain clinical experience. Students are also encouraged to observe the practice of external supervisors - the most experienced practitioners available. In their final year TCM students complete their training with an internship at a Chinese teaching hospital of the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. This clinical experience means our graduates can step straight into practice with confidence in their knowledge and skills.

Course: Bachelor of Health Science/Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
UWS also offers postgraduate training to current TCM practitioners to assist them to grow as specialists in their clinical practice. The Master of Health Science (Traditional Chinese Medicine) course is the only one of its kind in Australia and is sought out by a wide variety of practitioners.
