Adjunct Professor Barry McGlasson

Biography

Adjunct Professor Barry McGlasson has, for the whole of his career, focused on the postharvest physiology and technology of fresh horticultural food crops. He was first appointed as a Horticultural Research Officer specialising in postharvest with the South Australian Department of Agriculture in 1951, subsequently undertaking a PhD at the University of California Davis, USA and then moving to the former CSIRO Division of Food Research in Sydney in 1964. He retired from CSIRO in 1988 as a Senior Principal Research Scientist and joined the University of Western Sydney, Hawkesbury Campus where he was responsible for developing a Teaching Major in Postharvest in the undergraduate horticulture degree program and assisting the development of the UWS higher degree research program. Adjunct Professor McGlasson has supervised many PhD candidates over his career and continues to be involved in the supervision of higher degree students both at UWS and at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), Thailand as part of his liaison role between UWS and KMUTT. He has had considerable experience in technical assistance projects in Asia dating back to 1975. He has published many research papers, reviews and book chapters over his career in including co-authorship of Postharvest, an introductory textbook now in its 5th edition. This book arose from a technical assistance program to the original five ASEAN countries. Adjunct Professor McGlasson’s research is currently focussed on the genetic regulation of fruit development, ripening, quality and physiological disorders of stone fruit. This work is being conducted in collaboration with Australian and International scientists in Italy and the USA.
