Biography

Adjunct Professor Lin Sutherland was appointed to the School of Science, Food & Horticulture from 2002–2005 and continued in the School of Natural Sciences since 2006–2010. Previously he was a Principal Research Scientist at the Australian Museum, 1995–2001, continuing as a Research Associate/Senior Fellow at the Museum. He has formal academic qualifications in both geology and inorganic chemistry, including a PhD in volcanic petrology.

Grants / Current Projects

Principal research interests include the mineralogy and petrology of volcanic rocks, mantle-lower crust petrology and gemstone origins, in particular in Australasian-Asian regions. Current areas of research are listed below:

- Characterising gem corundum (sapphire, ruby) suites
- Origin of gem zircon megacryst suites
- Plate tectonic relationships in East Australian volcanism
- Landscape evolution of Mesozoic-Cenozoic terrains

Grants include: 2007–2010 Senior Fellow Grant, Australian Museum, for age dating studies, 2006 Joint ANSTO Grant, PIXE gemstone studies, 2004 Joint Grant, University of Tasmania, for sapphire studies, 2003 Australian Museum Research Grant, for zircon studies.
