
Gilbert is a Lecturer, Planning Consultant and has been a Senior Policy Advisor to the New South Wales Government contributing to cabinet-level discussions on the Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney. He has also held various positions in local government mostly in the areas of environmental management, environmental health and strategic planning.
Gilbert’s research interests and teaching focuses on the development of sustainable healthy communities and planning policy to facilitate adaptation to climate change. He strongly believes that you cannot secure a quality urban environment without understanding the issues that are specific to each locality.

Gilbert is a Member of the Planning Institute of Australia (MPIA)and a Certified Practicing Planner (CPP) and continues to advise the development industry on matters concerned with development consent, environmental impact and planning policy.
