Gilbert Blandin De Chalain

Biography

Gilbert is a Lecturer, Planning Consultant and has been a Senior Policy Advisor to the New South Wales Government contributing to cabinet-level discussions on the Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney. He has also held various positions in local government mostly in the areas of environmental management, environmental health and strategic planning.

Gilbert’s research interests and teaching focuses on the development of sustainable healthy communities and planning policy to facilitate adaptation to climate change. He strongly believes that you cannot secure a quality urban environment without understanding the issues that are specific to each locality.

Key concepts include:

  • healthy environments;
  •  urban development and human health outcomes;
  • housing, urban development and health; and,
  • the relationships between climate change adaptation policy, politics, urban planning and the built environment.

Gilbert's qualifications are Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Health and a Masters of Planning.

Recently Gilbert co-authored chapters in two texts, currently in publication. These being

  • “Impact of Obesity on Chronic Illness and Disability” in Chronic Illness and Disability– Principles for nursing practice, edited by Ester Chang and Amanda Johnson (2008); and,
  • “The Built Environment as a Determinant of Health” in Understanding Health: a determinants approach, edited by Helen Keleher and Colin MacDougall (2009).

Gilbert is a Member of the Planning Institute of Australia (MPIA)and a Certified Practicing Planner (CPP) and continues to advise the development industry on matters concerned with development consent, environmental impact and planning policy.
