Professor Andrew Beattie

Biography

Professor Beattie’s major research contributions have been on citrus pests and their natural enemies. He is an international authority on integrated pest management of pests of citrus (particularly scale insects) and other crops and one of the world’s leading authorities on the use of biorational horticultural and agricultural mineral oils. His current research is focused on: how mineral oils cause chronic phytotoxicity; the response of fruit flies and other phytophagous arthropods to mineral oil deposits; management of the devastating disease of citrus known as huanglongbing (citrus greening) and its vector the Asiatic citrus psyllid; the origins of the causative agent of huanglongbing α Proteobacteria in the genus ‘Candidatus Liberibacter’); and the origins and biogeography of the genus Citrus and Citrus relatives. This work, which is primarily being conducted in Indonesia, Vietnam, China and Australasia, is supported by a large ACIAR and Horticulture Australia Limited funded project, and separately by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research. He is principal supervisor of 3 PhD students; CH Nguyen, R Spooner-Hart and TH Dao.
