Biography

Professor William (Bill) S. Price completed both undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Sydney. He completed his PhD in 1990. His PhD work was on the development of experimental and theoretical approaches for measuring diffusion, viscosity, transport and binding of small molecules in human red blood cells using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. His supervisors were Professor Philip W. Kuchel and Dr. Bruce A. Cornell.

Professor Price's first postdoctoral position was at the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Science (IAMS) founded by the Nobel Laureate, Y. T. Lee in Taipei, Taiwan 1990-1993 with Professor Lian-Pin Hwang. At IAMS he developed advanced nuclear magnetic NMR relaxation techniques for studying molecular dynamics and also collaborated with the largest hospital in Taipei on clinical studies (hypothermia and pleural effusions).

His second postdoctoral position (1993-1995) was at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan with Prof. Kikuko Hayamizu where he investigated and developed sophisticated solid-state deuterium NMR techniques for investigating polymerization as part of a national project on the development of non-linear optical polymers. During this time Professor Price also collaborated with the Himeji Institute of Technology on the effects of hydration on phenyl ring dynamics in human insulin.

Professor Price currently holds the chair of nanotechnology in the School of Science and Health and the School of Medicine at the University of Western Sydney (UWS). He is the director of the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Facility and director of the UWS node of the National Imaging Facility and he is an Adjunct Professor at the National Wine and Grape Industry Centre at Charles Sturt University. He leads the Nanoscale Organisation and Dynamics Research Group at UWS.

Research scientist, Water Research Institute, Tsukuba, Japan (1995 -1996).
Chief scientist, Water Research Institute, Tsukuba, Japan (1996 - 1999).
Senior visiting scientist, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden (2000 - 2001).
Professor of Chemistry, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Tokyo, Japan (2001 – 2003).

Research

Professor Price’s research interests span the areas of physics, chemistry and biology relevant to Medical Nanotechnology. He is an expert in the theory, development and application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with particular emphasis on NMR diffusion measurements and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for studying molecular association and molecular dynamics, especially in the development of new NMR techniques, molecular dynamics in biological and chemical systems using NMR imaging, relaxation and pulsed gradient spin-echo NMR measurements of translational diffusion. Prof. Price’s research has direct applications to a wide range of practical problems including pharmaceutical screening and lithium batteries.

Current areas of research include:

  • Molecular mechanisms of ionic conduction (e.g., in lithium battery electrolytes).
  • Protein association and crystallisation.
  • Effects of macromolecular crowding on molecular association.
  • Theoretical/experimental studies of restricted diffusion in porous media.
  • Solution dynamics and self-association in aqueous solutions.
  • Development of sophisticated NMR and MRI techniques for studying molecular dynamics.
