Biography

Associate Professor Gannon is Equity strand leader in the Centre for Educational Research. She is a prolific publisher with interests in diverse fields of educational research including gender equity and diversity; creative writing pedagogies; media and cultural studies in educational research and educational policy. She uses a range of qualitative methodologies including autoethnography and narrative methodologies, collective biography, discourse analysis and she is particularly interested in how theories of affect and materiality are reshaping feminist theories and research methodologies in education.  She is the current Editor of the national journal English in Australia. She has been a CI on an ARC Linkage grant and ARC Discovery grant and is a recipient of a 2010 ACSANZ grant on "Diversity, Youth and Neo-Liberalism in Canada and Australia" with Marnina Gonick (Mount St Vincent University, Canada) and Jo Lampert (QUT). At UWS she teaches in the Master of Education (Leadership) and teaches English Method in the Master of Teaching (Secondary). She is the Director of Academic Programs for Adult and Postgraduate Education, and the Academic Course Advisor for the Master of Education (Leadership). She taught in secondary schools in several states for many years and also worked as an English curriculum adviser and Equity Programs Officer with Education Queensland before arriving at UWS in 2003.

Research

Susanne's research spans diverse topics and a broad range of qualitative methodologies. She has contributed to the development of innovative methods including collective biography or memory work, autoethnography, poetic and narrative inquiry and has written extensively on poststructural and feminist theories and their methodological implications. She takes up cultural studies and discourse analytic approaches to analyse all sorts of texts including feature and documentary film and television, advertisements, newspapers, theatre texts, YA and children's fiction and information texts, and policy. She is particularly interested in how theories of affect and matter are impacting on educational research.
