Biography

Dr Alana Lentin joined the School of Humanities and Communication Arts as a Senior Lecturer in Cultural and Social Analysis in June 2012 after six years in the Department of Sociology at the University of Sussex, UK.

She works on the critical theorization of race, racism and multiculturalism. She is currently working on a new research project on Racism and Antiracism in a Digital Age with Gavan Titley (National University of Ireland Maynooth).

Her publications include The Crises of Multiculturalism: Racism in a Neoliberal Age (with Gavan Titley, 2011); Racism and Ethnic Discrimination (2011); Racism (2008); The Politics of Diversity in Europe (with Gavan Titley, 2008); Race and State (with Ronit Lentin, 2006, 2008); Racism and Anti-racism in Europe (2004). She also publishes extensively in journals such as the Ethnic and Racial Studies, European Journal of Social Theory, the European Journal of Cultural Studies, and Patterns of Prejudice.

She is a contributor to The Guardian, OpenDemocracy and Eurozine.

Research

Alana Lentin is currently starting research on a new project entitled Racism and Antiracism in a Digital Age with Gavan Titley with whom she has worked for several years. Lentin and Titley co-authored The Crises of Multiculturalism: Racism in a Neoliberal Age and a Special issue of the European Journal of Cultural Studies on 'Multiculturalism'. They presented on this research at the 10th Crossroads Cultural Studies Conference in Tampere, Finland in July 2014.

Lentin and Titley have a chapter, 'More proof, if proof were needed: spectacles of secular insistence, multicultural failure, and the contemporary laundering of racism', in Rosi Braidotti et al., eds. Transformations of Religion and the Public Sphere: Postsecular Publics, 2015.

Racism Analysis Volume V - Racism and Sociology (co-edited with Wulf D. Hund, University of Hamburg) is in press with Lit. Verlag. and includes a chapter on 'Postracial Silences and the Othering of Race in Europe' on the elision, neglect and denial of race in European 'minorities, migration and ethnicities' research in addition toa n editorial co-written with professor Hund.

Associate Professor Lentin is also contributing a paper on 'Racism in Public or Public Racism' for a Special Issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies on 'Reconfiguring anti-racism' edited by Yin Paradies.

A paper responding to Michael Banton's article on the legacy of John Rex is also under prerpatation for a special 'Symposium' edition of Ethnic and Racial Studies.
