Doctor Cameron McAuliffe

Senior Lecturer in Human Geography & Urban Studies,
Geography, Tourism & Planning

Biography

Cameron McAuliffe is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography and Urban Studies in the School of Social Sciences and part of the Geography and Urban Studies academic group. Prior to this position, Cameron was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Centre for Cultural Research (2007-2010). As an urban, social and cultural geographer Cameron is interested in how we might develop a more ethical urbanism that accounts for the plural and complex nature of contemporary urban living.

His research draws on interdisciplinary approaches to better understand and account for wicked problems in the twenty-first century city, with a focus on urban order and disorder and the different ways we value our cities. Cameron is an applied researcher, having worked with a number of local governments in Sydney to help them better understand the perils, pitfalls and possibilities of contemporary graffiti management. He is also interested in contested politics of the city, working with different stakeholders to understand how we might produce a more democratic city.

Cameron has been involved in a range of funded research projects, including research on community attitudes to graffiti and street art (with Blacktown City Council, Inner West Council and the City of Sydney); critical approaches to cities of play (with City of Parramatta); and, understanding the role of public space in the high density city (with Urban Growth NSW/Landcom).

He teaches into the Bachelor of Planning program and the Geography and Urban Studies major in the Bachelor of Social Science in the School of Social Sciences. Currently, Cameron teaches the first year unit, Cities: Introduction to Urban Studies (101589) and the third year unit Geographies of Migration (101694).

Cameron’s published research includes articles in the journals Planning Theory, Urban Studies, Global Networks and Journal of Urban Affairs, along with local government reports that have informed policy development. He holds Bachelor’s degrees in Arts (Human Geography) and Engineering (Chemical) as well as a PhD in Human Geography, all from the University of Sydney.
