Biography
Federico Girosi has been an Associate Professor in Population Health at the School of Medicine, University of Western Sydney, since late 2011. He is currently an investigator in the Geographic and Resource Analysis in Primary Health Care Centre (GRAPHC), a project that applies a geographic approach to Australian primary care research in order to improve resource allocation.
Dr. Girosi earned a Ph.D. in Health Policy from Harvard University in June 2003, and worked at the RAND Corporation between 2003 and 2011 as a health economist and modeler. At RAND he was the leader of the modeling team for RAND’s Comprehensive Assessment of Reform Efforts initiative (COMPARE). As part of this project he developed a microsimulation model for the analysis of the effects of health insurance reform. The simulation uses utility maximization principles to model the choices made by both families and employers when faced with new insurance choices and financial incentives such as subsidies and penalties.
Dr. Girosi has also collaborated with D. Goldman and contributed to the development of the Future of the Elderly Model (FEM). The FEM is a reduced-form Markovian microsimulation model that can be used to estimate the cost-effectiveness of preventive intervention and predict the health status and the medical expenditures of the U.S. population age 51 and older.
In 2006 Dr. Girosi led the modeling effort for a Gates Foundation project aiming to evaluate the benefits of introducing new diagnostic tools in the developing world. In addition, he was part of a RAND team that quantified the cost and benefits of widespread adoption of electronic medical records systems in health care.
He also holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Genoa, Italy, and conducted research for 10 years at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Girosi has published in a number of peer-reviewed international journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Health Affairs, Nature, Science and the Proceedings of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He is also the author of a book, published by Princeton University Press in 2008 and co-authored by Gary King, entitled “Demographic Forecasting”.
