Research
Our laboratory is interested in understanding the biological significance of genetic variants that have been identified as being asociated with allergic eczema (atopic dermatitis) and asthma. Until recently, the immune system was the focus of research into the genetic basis of allergic diseases. However, recent work has now shown that genetic variants can also affect the development and integrity of the epidermal barrier. The epidermal barrier is the impermeable outer layer of skin that prevents water loss and protects the body against invasion from infectious agents and environmental irritants. We have has a long-standing interest in identifying genetic variants that modulate the activation of gene expression. We are currently using an in vitro model of keratinocyte growth and differentiation to understand the regulation and function of several genes identified in genetic asociation studies of allergic disease that we believe play an important role in epidermal barrier homeostasis.
