Biography

Dr. Siegler joined the University of Western Sydney in January 2011 as Senior Lecturer in the Sport and Exercise Science Program. Before moving to Australia he lectured in the Sport, Health & Exercise Science Department at the University of Hull in the UK and in the Physical Activity and Exercise Science Department at Brooklyn College in the US.

Jason received a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of New Mexico (USA), and is a certified athletic trainer (NATA). As well as teaching, he has held positions in Cardiac Rehabilitation at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, NY and New Heart Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre.

Jason's research agenda is primarily focused around nutritional interventions for improving exercise tolerance and fatigue. Over the past five years, his primary focus has been on the maintenance of acid-base balance during high-intensity exercise. Jason has conducted and published numerous performance studies related to acid-base manipulation prior to supramaximal exercise. More recently, he has begun to explore the relationship between acid-base balance and neuromuscular function in a fatigue context.

Research

My research agenda is primarily focused around nutritional interventions for improving exercise tolerance. Over the past five years, my primary focus has been on the maintenance of acid-base balance during high-intensity exercise. I have conducted and published numerous studies on the potential for manipulating acid-base balance prior to supramaximal exercise (e.g. 200 m sprints) in an attempt to sustain an athlete’s performance capacity. More recently, I have begun to explore the potential stress implications during prolonged, high-intensity activity by looking at various oxidative stress markers. This work has recently led to cross-disciplinary collaborations with colleagues in the medical field, which will potentially widen the impact for understanding stress induced responses during exercise in clinical populations.
