Biography
My engagement in the analysis and application of Lean Systems Thinking and other innovations in health services delivery is the culmination of over 30 years of study and work. Extensive engagement with industry, complemented by academic studies in psychology, business administration and innovation provide me with a distinctive skill set. My passion is using this skill set to address questions about propensities to innovate, the innovation process and the diffusion of management and technological innovations, particularly quality improvement techniques, in health services organisations.
The completion of BSc (Psych) studies with First Class Honours provides evidence of my on-going fascination with individual and group psychology. The knowledge gained in my undergraduate studies informed my 18-year career in IBM in a range of technical, people management and leadership positions. My IBM career constantly involved change, and change management. In addition to participating in constant organisational change, my managerial contributions included creating, leading and implementing change programs on an Australia-wide basis. Furthermore, in my early, technical roles, I routinely led customers through the logistical, technological and social issues associated with making process improvements using information technology. During this period, I continued my academic studies part-time and graduated with a MBA with credit in 2000.
My PhD studies commenced in 2004, and focussed on the topics of innovation and occupational culture. This choice illustrates my continuing interest in change, and individual and group motivations to embrace or resist attempts to introduce new products, or methods of operation. My post-doctoral work has permitted the application of my experience and expertise in the topics of innovation, technology and change management in the context of health services delivery, as can been seen from over 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals, at academic and professional conferences and in edited books.
