Biography
Kate Huppatz is a lecturer in Sociology at the University of Western Sydney. Prior to joining UWS Kate completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Sydney (2007-2010) where she also studied for her honours degree and PhD in sociology (2003-2007). Kate is interested in exploring the role of culture in the production and reproduction of inequality. Her work has examined contemporary gendered and classed identities and practices, and the intersectionality of gender and class, including the relationship between motherhood and class and the relationship between masculinity, femininity, class and work. Most recently she has completed a monograph titled Gender Capital at Work: intersections of femininity, masculinity, class and occupation (Palgrave Macmillan UK, forthcoming, 2012).

Research
Kate Huppatz's research examines contemporary gendered and classed identities and practices, and the intersectionality of gender and class, including the relationship between motherhood and class and the relationship between masculinity, femininity, class and work. Within her research Kate draws on and reworks Bourdieu's approach to gender and class.
She is currently working on a project titled Regulating Motherhood: understanding the relationship between mothering and class which has been awarded a UWS Seed Grant.
Kate has co-edited a collection (with Associate Professor Susan Goodwin, 2010) titled The Good Mother: contemporary motherhoods in Australia which explores the different ways in which mothers are regulated in contemporary Australia. She has also authored a monograph titled Gender Capital at Work: intersections of femininity, masculinity, class and occupation (Palgrave Macmillan UK, forthcoming, 2012) for which she researched how gender operates as 'capital' in several feminised occupations including nursing, social work, exotic dancing and hairdressing.
