Biography

Kristy is a registered occupational therapist.  She graduated with first class honours from the University of Western Sydney (UWS) in 1998. Her honours research investigated post-acute occupational therapy intervention with older adults. Since graduation Kristy has worked in acute, rehabilitation and outpatient settings primarily in the Sydney West Area Health Service. Kristy has been involved in program development, health evaluation research with people with chronic airway limitation, and represented allied health on area wide collaboratives. Kristy is currently completing her PhD into the effectiveness of an individualised program to promote safety and maintain mobility for drivers aged 75 years and older. It is anticipated that this research will help inform policy and practice in the area and help older people maintain community mobility regardless of driving status. Kristy is also involved in research evaluating seat belt fit in drivers aged 75 years and older, use of add-on seat belt and seat accessories by older drivers and use of powered two-wheeled motorbikes in children. Kristy has a strong interest in exploring best practice for optimising independence while preserving safety within community groups.   Kristy has presented papers at conferences both nationally and internationally. She joined the University of Western Sydney in 2005 as a casual lecturer and was appointed to a permanent part-time position in 2006.

Research

Kristy is currently conducting a randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an individualised program to promote safety and maintain mobility for drivers aged 75 years and older.  Using in-vehicle monitoring as objective measurement of driving exposure, this study will be able to detect changes in driving exposure and safety between groups.  Kristy is also involved in reseach evaluating seat belt fit in drivers aged 75 years and older, use of add-on seat belt and seat accessories by older drivers and use of powered two-wheeled motorbikes in childen
