Research

Qualities of Nursing – a mixed methods longitudinal project 2009-2012

From student to Graduate Nurse - changes over time. This is a 4 year longitudinal project began in 2009 and Ethics approved for 4 years. The aim was to construct and longitudinally test a ‘no-frills’ global scale to reliably and validly measure the contemporary qualities of nursing. The first wave of data was completed, analysed and 3 journal articles have been created with 1 in print 1 in press and 1 about to enter the review process.

Initial paper survey participation numbers were 767 for 2009, on-line survey in Qualtrics provided 527 responses for 2010, and 339 for 2011. This cohort has now completed their Bachelor of Nursing program and the final survey will be posted to the New Graduate Nurses in October 2012. Whilst data collection will conclude at the end of 2012, analysis of data and longitudinal papers are planned for construction in 2013.

Professional Identity Development In New Health Professionals

The project began November 2008 with the aim of examining Professional Identity (PI) development in nursing and medical students. The project plans to examine the professional identity development for nursing and medical students using a mixed methods approach on development issues and educational needs. Findings from the initial Pilot study in 2011 on a sample of nursing students clearly demonstrated a fall in 4 out of 5 measures of PI from 1st to 3rd year providing the team with good direction for a proposed larger study in 2013. The results of a second Pilot study with a sample of 1st and 3rd year medical students are currently being assessed. Two theoretically based papers are currently in press with prestigious international journals. One instrument paper is currently being reviewed and another is at the construction stage.
