Biography

I have made significant contributions to the understanding of polymerization kinetics and the separation and characterization of polymers, especially branched polymers, polyelectrolytes and polysaccharides.

In terms of polymerization kinetics, using a combination of theory, simulation and experiment, I showed that certain reactions (viz., transfer) with dead polymer chains play a major role in the (radical) polymerization of alkyl acrylates, widely used industrially (in adhesives, coatings and paints). It was published in several seminal papers, including one on benchmark rate coefficients, under the auspices of IUPAC (the interntional governing body in chemistry).

I have made important contributions to the understanding of the separation of polymers by liquid chromatography (particularly size-exclusion chromatography, SEC, also knonw as GPC). I showed that SEC is generally applied in a limited and too often also incorrect way. I showed how these problems could be corrected by proper use of apparent molar masses (e.g. polystyrene -equivalent or pullulan-equivalent molar masses) determined by SEC  in controlled/living polymerization or for the determination of transfer coefficients in radical polymerization. I derived the first rigorous expression for the signals of multiple detectors in SEC, and showed how such data can be processed correctly for complex polymers. I have applied this theory to the first accurate characterization of branched poly(alkyl acrylates), branched glucans and amphiphilic and double-hydrophilic block copolymers (pH-responsive and thermoresponsive) , studies which give considerable insight into the (bio)syntheses of these important classes of polymers. I showed that the local dispersity can be determined using multiple-detection SEC and used to estimate the accuracy of the molecular weight determined by SEC. In the cases  where the accuracy of the moleclar weight is low (e.g. 100 % error), I have shown that hydrodynamic volume distribution can lead to meaningful and accurate information.

I have proposed free solution capillary electrophoresis as an alternative to liquid chromatography in the critical conditions for the separation and characterization of polyelectrolytes and polysaccharides by their structure such as composition (copolymer) or branching. The method, capillary electorphoresis in the critical condtions, can be used even to characterize soluble fractions in suspensions (no flitration needed) as in the case of gellan gums. it can separate conjugates according tothe functionalization for example chitosan conjugates.

I graduated in Paris, University Pierre and Marie Curie under Prof Jean-Pierre Varion and Prof Bernadette Charleux in 2003. My first post-doc was in the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Reserach, Minaz, in 2004-2005. I was then research Fellows in the Key Centre for Polymer (and) Colloids (KCPC) in the University of Sydney (2005-2006), the Centre for Nutrition and Food Sciences (CNAFS) in the University of Queensland (2006-2008) and the Insitute of Physical Chemistry at the University of Mainz (2009).  In 2010, I joined UWS and the Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science (ACROSS).

Research

My reseach aims at establishing the relations between the structure of polymers and their synthesis (radical polymerization or biosynthesis) and the structure of polymers and their properties (such cell adhesion, drug binding, drug release etc.). We are developping new separation and characterization methods mainly based on capillary electrophoresis and SEC (as well as solid-state NMR and others).

Together with Dr Marion Gaborieau, Prof Janice Aldrich-Wright and Dr Mark Jones (UWS) and Dr Yohann Guillaneuf (Aix-Marseille University), we are developping new delivery agents for anticancer drugs. We use smart polymers synthesized in Marseille as agents. We characterize these  and their binding to anticancer drugs using capillary electrophoresis in the critical conditions (and other method including solid-state NMR). Alison Maniego complete a first class honours project on this topic and is going further on a PhD in 2013.

Together with Dr Marion Gaborieau and Dr Michael O'Connor, we are developping new substrates for stem cell culture. The synthesis of the substrate is monitored (and optimized) using capillary electrorphoresis. The substrates are then characterized by solid-state NMR as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy in collaboration with Dr Ric Wuehrer.

Together with James Oliver, Dr Marion Gaborieau , Dr Michael Philips, Julie Markham and Dr Paul Peiris (UWS)  and Prof Emiliy Hilder (ACROSS, University of Tasmania), we are developping fast and accurate method to determine sugar compostion in plant fiber or in bioethanol production, comparing capillary electrophoresis and the different possible forms of liquid chromatography (including ion-exchange and HILIC).

Together with Dr Marion Gaborieau, Dr Valentina Naumovski and Prof Kelvin Chan, we are investigating the relation between the structure of glucomans and the health benefit related to their consumption as food.

Together with Dr Marion Gaborieau (UWS), Dr Aurelia Charlot and Prof Etienne Fleury (INSA, Lyon, France), we characterize polysaccharides and their composities for bioplastics.

Together with Dr Marion Gaborieau (UWS) and Prof Mathias Destarac (University Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France), we characterize new smart block copolymers.
