Biography
My research explores the intersections of Western multicultural politics, criminal justice and law. An overarching research priority is an interrogation of the various ways in which unpopular minorities are morally, politically and culturally marginalised in legal and broader community arenas. Specifically, I am interested in how the politics of exclusion, through racism, can lead to punitive criminal justice practices and the appropriation of victims' and womens' rights movements. These interests are explored through a critique of the gendered and racialised assumptions of liberalism and orientalism. My research specifically explores moral panics and (anti)multicultural discourses around "Muslim" crime, political and legal debates on legal pluralism, and racialised representations of gendered violence and misogyny in orientalist understandings of Muslim masculinity. My doctoral research focused on the role of the courts in racialised moral panics around a series of gang rapes perpetrated by young Muslim background men in Sydney. This research was informed by a disciplinary background in philosophy.
