Biography
Dr Slewa-Younan completed her PhD in 2003 on sex differences in the brain function of patients with first episode psychosis and schizophrenia. In 2003 she was awarded an NHMRC Post-doctoral Training Fellowship to investigate the role of sex hormones in the recovery from acute traumatic brain injury. In addition to this fellowship she secured a project grant in 2004 from the NSW Motor Accidents Authority for investigating sex differences and the mechanisms of recovery following acute traumatic brain injury. She has been invited to present her research at a number of seminars, including an invited seminar at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. She has been asked to provide scientific reviews for two project grants submitted to NHMRC. Dr Slewa-Younan has been working as consultant psychologist to Transcultural Mental Health Service (at Cumberland Hospital) since 2001. During this role she has gained significant experience in the mental health of refugee populations. Since 2007, she has being working in private practice, primarily servicing the needs of Iraqi refugees. She is currently conducting research into refugee mental health, with a focus on psychophysiological measures of arousal associated with trauma.
