Biography
My current position is Postdoctoral Research Fellow Academic Level B for the Joint Chair in Traditional Chinese Medicine (JCTCM, 0.6 FTE, employed since July, 2010), a joint appointment between the University of Sydney and the University of Western Sydney. I am responsible for initiating new research activities and expanding the research program in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In this position, I plan and develop laboratory and clinical experiments to meet the proposed objectives of the JCTCM program. I manage and oversee numerous research projects including the quality investigation of herbs, survey of herbs in Australia, patient-reported outcomes of TCM treatment, herbs in metabolic syndrome, and understanding the mechanism of action of two-herb formulae. With my colleagues, I undertake under- and postgraduate research supervision (currently 3 PhD, 2 Masters (Honours) and 2 Bachelor honours students). I currently mentor a research assistant in the JCTCM program in the chemical profile, quantitative analysis and in vitro evaluation of TCM herbs. I maintain the efficiency of the research work at the two campuses by assisting with the administration of the projects including organising meetings, reporting the progress of projects to the JCTCM and research members, preparing grant and ethics applications and manuscripts for publications. I collaborate with members of each research team at the two campuses who have specialist expertise in many facets of herbal medicine research including phytochemistry, pharmacology, clinical and social studies.
I graduated from my PhD in March, 2006. I was employed as an Associate Lecturer (Level A, 0.6 FTE) in the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Sydney from May 2007 to June 2010 with the job description emphasising teaching and administration only, and research was not a component of my duties. My tasks included lecturing, lab demonstrating and tutoring; preparation of material, lectures, exams and marking of exams, consulting with students, lab work and presentations, subject co-ordination and administration. During my employment as Associate Lecturer, I undertook research in my own time with the Herbal Medicines Research Group in the Faculty of Pharmacy. The research focussed on the quality standardisation of herbal medicines, correlating the chemistry of herbal medicines to their biological activity, with specialisation in metabolic syndrome (diabetes, cardiovascular and related complications). I was a co-supervisor to 4 MPhil and 2 Masters (Honours) students during this time.
