Biography

Awarded a personal chair in Women's Health Psychology in 2002, Jane Ussher has been working on research on gendered health, since she started her PhD in 1983. Her research has been conducted within an integrated knowledge translation framework, focusing on LGBTQI Health; sexuality and the reproductive body; as well as exploring gendered and sexuality in cancer survivorship. As a trained clinical psychologist, she has also made a contribution to the integration of research and clinical practice in gendered and sexual health, including the development of a women centred psychological treatment for premenstrual distress, and minimal interventions and resources in the area of cancer and sexuality, cancer and fertility, and LGBTQI cancer.

Jane has published over 300 peer reviewed journal articles, chapters and reports, and presented over 150 conference papers (many as invited or keynote speaker). She is editor of the Routledge Women and Psychology book series, and author of a number of books, including The Psychology of the Female Body (Routlege 1989), Women's Madness: Misogyny or Mental Illness? (Harvester Wheatsheaf, 1991), Fantasies of Femininity: Reframing the Boundaries of Sex (Pengin, 1997), Managing the Monstrous Feminine: Regulating the Reproductive Body (Routledge, 2007) and The Madness of Women: Myth and Experience (Routledge, 2011). 

Jane has also edited a number of books: Gender Issues in Clinical Psychology (with Paula Nicolson; Routledge 1992); The Psychology of Women's Health and Health Care (McMillan, 1992); Psychological Perspectives on Sexual Problems (Routledge, 1993); Bodytalk: The Material and Discursive Regulation of Madness, Sexuality and Reproduction (Routledge, 1997); Women's Health: Contemporary International Perspectives (Blackwell, 2000); Gay and Bisexual Men Living with Prostate Cancer: From Diagnosis to Recovery (Harrington Park Press, 2018, with Janette Perz and Simon Rosser), which was recently awarded the Benjamin Franklin Award, by the Independent Book Publishers Association, for excellence in LGBTQ publishing (2019); and the Routledge Handbook of Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health (Routledge, 2019, with Janette Perz and Joan Chrisler).

She is President of the Australian Society for Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ASPOG) (2017-2021), and President of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research (2019-2021), a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and elected member of the International Academy of Sex Research.

Jane is editor of the Routledge Women and Psychology book series, and Editor in Chief of the journal Women's Reproductive Health.

She is on the editorial board of several journals, including Counselling Psychology Quarterly, Psychology Health and Medicine, Psychology Review, Psychology Evolution and Gender, British Journal of Clinical Psychology, Social Theory and Health, Psychology and Sexuality, and Contemporary Social Science.

She has received over 10 million dollars in research funding from the ESRC & NHS (UK), ARC, PCFA, NSW Cancer Council, NBCF, CanTeen, and Family Planning NSW, amongst others. Her current funded projects include an ARC Linkage project on LGBTIQ+ experiences of cancer; an ANROWS funded project on sexual violence and transgender women; sexual health of migrant and refugee women; and an ANROWS funded project on the impact of complex sexual abuse on women.
