The UWS Counselling Service provides workshops and programs that will help you to succeed at university. They will provide you with information and skills that will allow you to make the most of your university studies and will help in overcoming obstacles to study. The skills that you will develop here are also highly valued by employers and will contribute to your graduate attributes.
Places are limited, so you are encouraged to book early after each workshop registration opens. All UWS students are welcome to register for workshops on any campus. All registrations for Spring session open on 14 July 2008.
Register here for one or more workshops.
Research indicates that 15 to 20 per cent of University students experience considerable anxiety when presenting in tutorials.
The Public Speaking Anxiety Group is a 5 week program (one workshop per week) designed to assist you if you experience moderate to high levels of anxiety when presenting in tutorials. This program focuses on strategies aimed at reducing anxiety as well as providing an opportunity for you to practice and further develop skills in a supportive environment. The program is open to all students at UWS. You need to be available to attend all 5 workshops.

University can be a very competitive and demanding environment, with a lot of importance placed on performance and achievement. This pressure can be especially hard to manage for people who have perfectionist tendencies. Unlike high achievers, perfectionists place expectations upon themselves that are beyond all reach or reason. They may procrastinate, experience anxiety and fear at the thought of just simply making a mistake, and feel a sense of inadequacy and quilt. Sometimes the stress and pressure can be so great that even really capable students seriously consider 'dropping out', rather than handing in work that is not perfect!
This 3 week group program will help you to become more aware of the ways in which perfectionism may impact upon your life. We will explore the helpful as well as the not-so-helpful aspects of having perfectionist standards and identify thoughts and behaviour that contribute to and maintain perfectionism. Together we will discuss practical strategies to cope with perfectionism and begin to accept and embrace our 'humanness'.
You will need to attend all 3 sessions.

The first few months at university are never easy and you may have thought why am I here? Is this the course for me? Am I going to pass? I have too much else happening in my life to study! I can't afford to study! The stress is too much!
Talk to someone before you decide to drop-out as there may be options you have not considered. This one-off workshop will provide you with information that may assist in this important decision-making process. It is timed to take place just before the census date.
You will also have the opportunity to speak to a counsellor individually afterwards about your situtation.

Tutorial presentations and stress always seem to go together, but too much stress for too long is bad for your health and your performance. If you think stress is controlling you rather than you controlling stress - or if you just want to brush up on your presentation skills and techniques - then this workshop is for you.

Anxiety is a natural reaction that everyone experiences, however for some people anxiety prevents them from reaching their goals and their potential.
When the body triggers an anxiety response you essentially feel ‘nervous’. You may have felt this way before an exam or had a mental block within an exam.
If you want to master your anxiety and stay in your Peak Performance Zone, come to this workshop.
