Academic Dress

Each graduand is required to wear full UWS academic dress.

Due to the unique nature of academic dress, we suggest smart attire and recommend the following:

• Men: shirt and tie and smart, comfortable footwear
• Women: a top or dress with buttons and smart, comfortable footwear.

To order and pay for attendance at your graduation ceremony and academic dress hire or purchase, you use our internet payment system, iPay. You may either pay online using a credit card or print an order form from iPay and pay using one of the range of payment options available - including paying with cash at the Post Office.

Undergraduate academic dress

The academic dress worn by graduates of UWS comprises a black Cambridge undergraduate gown, a black cloth trencher (hat) and either a stole or a hood with the colour appropriate to the discipline. You should wear the trencher (hat) squarely on your head and not at an angle. The tassel should hang to the back of the trencher.

A stole is worn by graduates with certificates, associate diplomas and diplomas and is depicted by the amount of stripes on the stole. Graduate Diploma stole has three stripes in the appropriate colour. Graduate Certificate has two stripes in the appropriate colour. Diploma has one stripe in the appropriate colour.

Graduates with bachelors degree wear a hood of black exterior fabric with a silk trim in the appropriate colour.

Postgraduate academic dress

Academic dress of PhD graduates is a black Cambridge gown with a red satin front panel. The hood is of grey fabric with a full University blue lining and the Bonnet is black with a red tassel.

Academic dress of Master's graduates is a black Cambridge masters gown, a black cloth trencher (hat) and a hood of black exterior fabric with a full silk lining in the appropriate colour.

Academic dress hire

To attend your graduation ceremony you will need to pay the compulsory graduation attendance fee of $55.00 plus pay for any of the three compulsory academic dress items you wish to purchase and/or hire.

Full hire of academic dress
The full hire for the three items of academic dress is AUD $55.00.

If you hire your academic dress, then the hire of your academic dress, plus the compulsory graduation fee of AUD $55.00 is AUD $110.00.

Individual hire
You may wish, for example, to hire your academic gown and trencher and purchase your hood.  The individual hire costs are:

Returning your academic dress

Academic dress must be returned no later than 45 minutes after the completion of your ceremony.

If you do not return your academic dress in time you will be charged the full purchase cost of academic dress.
