GWS has residents from more than 170 countries, more Indigenous residents than states like South Australia, some 200,000 small to medium enterprises and is the third largest economy in the country. More than 80% of its residents drive to work – one of the largest percentages in the world. Along the Hawkesbury-Nepean River are a wide range of urban agricultural enterprises; beyond is the Blue Mountains National Park a world heritage site. Water, energy and social harmony pose major challenges to the 1.5 million people who live in the region.
