The History of UWS

The University of Western Sydney is the inheritor of many of Sydney’s historic architectural and social ‘jewels’.  It emerged as a result of the growth of social and educational institutions founded in centres and along pathways laid down by the Indigenous peoples even before colonization.  This heritage is a living reality both for the University and its communities. In a sense, then, UWS is the steward for

> cultural and

> educational

heritages both for Greater Western Sydney and Australia as a whole.  It is also the major trans-regional institution in Sydney's West, a source of pride and achievement for the people of Western Sydney, who see the University as

> 'one of Australia's great universities'.
