About

The UWSCollege Diploma in Science prepares students for tertiary study in Science by providing important prerequisite knowledge in the areas of chemistry and mathematics, in addition to incorporating science units.

It is ideal for students who have just missed out on direct entry to UWS Science, Natural Science or Medical Science degrees and would like to fast-track their study and improve their entry qualifications.

For the Diploma in Science, you must pass the following units:

  • Biodiversity
  • Cell Biology
  • Essential Chemistry 1
  • Essential Chemistry 2
  • Scientific Literacy
  • Tertiary Study Skills*.

You must also pass one of the following units (based on advice from UWSCollege prior to enrolment):

  • Analysis of Change
  • Quantitative Thinking.

If you wish to enter the Bachelor of Natural Science (Animal Science), the Bachelor of Natural Science (Environmental Management) or the Bachelor of Natural Science (Environment and Health) upon successful completion of your studies, you must also pass the following two units:

  • Resource Sustainability
  • Integrated Science.

Or,

if you wish to enter the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Medical Science upon successful completion of your studies, you must also pass the following two units:

  • Introduction to Anatomy
  • Introduction to Physiology.

* No advanced standing at university will be granted for this unit.

You will need to satisfy the requirements below to be eligible for entry.
  1. Academic entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements are successful* completion of Australian Year 12 or equivalent or UWSCollege University Foundation Studies or equivalent.

    Students are also assumed to have completed study in Mathematics at senior high school level.

    For students who have completed UWSCollege University Foundations Studies, the entry requirements are:
    • Standard (three terms) — a Grade Point Average of 5.5 or higher
    • Fast Track (two terms) — a Grade Point Average of 6.0 or higher and a “C” result in any University Foundation Studies mathematics unit if enrolling in Analysis of Change.
  2. For information on country-specific entry requirements, see UWS International Academic Requirements (particularly the **Undergraduate and Postgraduate Entry Requirements table).

  3. English entry requirements

    International students must satisfy one of the following language requirements:
    • IELTS (Academic) 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each sub-band
    • EAP 4 50% pass and pass in the overall test component
    • a “C” result in University Foundation Studies English
    • IELTS (Academic) 6.0 equivalent in the UWSCollege English Entrance Test.

* Successful completion means gaining a 50% pass in all required units.

You can complete the equivalent of one year of full-time study over 12 months (three terms) or eight months (two terms) of full-time study.
Each unit is assessed through a combination of continual assessment and mid-term and final examinations. Details for each unit are contained in the individual Unit Outlines.

Successful completion of the Diploma in Science provides advanced standing of 80 credit points (equivalent to a year of study) in the Bachelor of Medical Science, Bachelor of Natural Science or Bachelor of Science in most key programs at UWS. The Bachelor of Science can also be studied without a key program.

To successfully complete your diploma, you will need at least a 50% pass in all required units.
