About

The UWSCollege Diploma of Social Science (Policing) offers analytical and problem solving skills and a client-focused approach to serving the community that will help students develop an appreciation of the diverse nature of Australian society.

Whether you plan to apply to join the NSW Police Force or you are after a career in other areas of law enforcement (such as the criminal justice system or workplace investigations), the UWSCollege Diploma in Social Science (Policing) is the ideal pathway. The course has been developed in collaboration with the NSW Police Force and is based on real-life, practical experience. It will provide you with essential knowledge and skills in policing theory and practice to equip you for a career with the NSW Police Force and other policing agencies.

Students enrolled in this diploma study eight (8) units from the first year of the Bachelor of Policing, which itself equips graduates with an introduction to policing and provides the foundation for students wishing to join the NSW Police Force, or other policing or related organisation*.

*Disclaimer: Students seeking a career with the NSW Police Force, national intelligence agencies, customs and border protection, juvenile justice, corrections or other state and federal police agencies should be aware of the entrance requirements of those agencies to ensure they satisfy them.

You will study the following units in your Standard diploma:

    • NSW Police — Professional Suitability Assessment* (PSA)
  • Term 2 —
    • Working with Communities
    • The Geographies of Social Difference
    • Introduction to Crime and Criminal Justice
  • Term 3 —
    • Contemporary Policing
    • Theories and Concepts of Policing
    • Introduction to Criminology.

* NSW Police PSA must be undertaken during Term 1 for entry in to the NSW Police Force.

Minimum entry requirements are successful* completion of Australian Year 12 or equivalent or UWSCollege University Foundation Studies or equivalent.

For students who have completed their HSC, the ATAR entry requirement for this course is ATAR > 50.

For students who have completed UWSCollege University Foundations Studies, the entry requirements are:

  • a Grade Point Average of 5.5 or higher
  • a "C" grade in University Foundation Studies English.
Note: Entry scores are indicative only. Other factors may be taken into consideration.

* Successful completion means gaining a 50% pass in all required units.
You can complete the diploma in one year of full-time study (three terms).
Each unit is assessed through a combination of continual assessment and mid-term and final examinations. Details for each unit are contained in the individual Unit Outlines.

Successful completion of the Diploma in Social Science (Policing) provides advanced standing of 80 credit points (equivalent to a year of study) in the Bachelor of Policing or Bachelor of Social Science (Criminology and Criminal Justice) at UWS.

To successfully complete your diploma, you will need at least a 50% pass in all required units.
