PhD and Doctor of Creative Arts

As part of its commitment to research in writing, the Centre offers supervision for postgraduate research candidates for both PhDs and DCAs (Doctor of Creative Arts). These may be scholarly studies of literary topics or authors, or doctoral theses which combine a creative writing component with exegesis. Distinguished postgraduate research candidates have included or do include Georgia Blain, Mireille Juchau, Stephanie Dowrick, Peter Kocan, Christopher Kremmer, Belinda Castles, Matthew Thompson and Kristel Thornell. Visit our student publications page to see some of the achievements of our postgraduate candidates.

Master of Arts in Cultural and Creative Practice

The Writing and Society Research Centre also offers a Master of Arts in Cultural and Creative Practice under the banner of the Sydney Consortium (opens in a new window). It is a coursework degree compatible with a model developed and run by the London Consortium (opens in a new window) since 1993. The degree is concerned with artistic, cultural and theoretical practice through collaborations between the Sydney Consortium and cultural institutions in Greater Sydney.

Seminars

The Centre supports an active program of seminars, lectures and conferences designed to provide opportunities for students to present their work and to discuss relevant issues with visiting academics and other authorities. There are two kinds of seminar: one devoted to postgraduate presentations, the other a general research seminar which features papers on research in progress, delivered by Centre members and visiting scholars and writers. Visitors have included Charles Altieri, Susan Stewart, Adam Frank, Mark Macleod, John Frow, Meaghan Morris, Robyn Ferrell, Laura Marks, Li Yao and Bruno Clément. PhD, DCA and MA students are all encouraged to attend our seminars.

Soiree

Each year we hold a postgraduate soiree, to which prospective postgraduate candidates from all universities are invited. For more information please email writing@uws.edu.au.
