Westside

Writing and Society Research Centre is committed to supporting writing and literary culture in Western Sydney. As part of this commitment it supports Westside through the mentoring of Western Sydney writers and editors and by contributing to the production of publications. Centre members Professor Ivor Indyk and Alexis Wright have acted as mentors while Writing and Society post-grads Felecity Castagna, Luke Carmen, Fiona Wright and Pip Smith have all been involved in Westside's activities.

Westside Publications

Westside's most recent publication is On Western Sydney. "It is a collection of stories that span from the sidewalks of Belmore to the streets of Bankstown to the roads across the Great Western Highway." To find out more about this publication visit the byds website (opens in a new window).

Westside Writers Group Events

The Westside Writers Group have produced a number of shows for the Sydney Writers Festival that have become well-known throughout Western Sydney and beyond for their innovative approach to performing writing. Their most recent show for SWF 2012 combined moving and still images, dance and reading the tell the group's stories of moving in and out of Western Sydney. This event was co-directed by Michael Mohammed Ahmed and Felicity Castagna who are both studying with Writing and Society and also included performances by other members of the centre, Luke Carmen and Fiona Wright. Many of the performers were mentored by Writing and Society's Professor Ivor Indyk.
