HEAT and Giramondo books

The Writing and Society Research Group houses the prestigious literary journal HEAT, and its associated Giramondo book imprint, which publishes some of the most significant contemporary Australian authors.

HEAT was founded in 1996, and is now in its second series. It publishes fiction and poetry alongside essays of general interest, many written from a scholarly background. Each issue also includes a colour feature on a contemporary Australian artist. HEAT is a DEST-recognised refereed journal which, because of its appeal to an educated general readership, and the quality of its writing, is available in bookshops as well as by subscription. Writers featured in recent issues include David Malouf, Gillian Mears, Alexis Wright, Beverley Farmer, Peter Craven, David Walker, Hoa Pham, Tom Cho, Mandy Sayer, Bernard Cohen, James Bradley and Aravind Adiga. There have been essays on a wide range of subjects, film, music, history, botany, zines, bush-walking, illness, music, art and literature.

The Giramondo book imprint publishes novels, poetry and essay collections of the highest literary quality: its titles have won nine major literary awards, and been shortlisted for many others. Recent publications include the novels by Brian Castro, The Garden Book, Alexis Wright, Carpentaria, Antoni Jach, Napoleon's Double, Mireille Juchau, Burning In and Sara Knox, The Orphan Gunner; fictional 'essays' by John Hughes, Someone Else; the classic reprint, Gerald Murnane, Tamarisk Row; the memoirs by Antigone Kefala, Sydney Journals, Dmetri Kakmi, Mother Land and Robert Gray, The Land I Came Through Last; and new poetry collections by Joanne Burns, Lisa Gorton, Lucy Dougan, Michael Farrell and Alan Wearne.

We particularly welcome scholarly essays, written for a general readership, for publication in HEAT. Postgraduate members of the Group are also invited to gain experience in literary publishing and contemporary writing practices by working in our publishing program.
